Female Number 2

topic posted Mon, September 13, 2004 - 4:43 PM by  Antonius
Now, i have just gotten introduced to this show (and it has become quite my obsession) and i am wondering if anyone knows about a connection between female #2's and that black cat? It seems like every episode that featured, and by featured i mean "was number 2 the whole episode", a female number 2 also had a black cat in it. However... i haven't seen all of the episodes yet, sooo this could be a random thing that happened once or twice. Any info? Symbolism?

"Dance of the Dead" is the only episode to feature a female Number 2 throughout. It's also the only episode in which the black cat plays a major role.

In "Many Happy Returns" (the first "escape" episode), the cat is briefly glimpsed as 6 is putting together his raft and provisions. There, too, a female Number 2 is revealed in the final scene of the episode, but she was introduced earlier as Mrs. Butterworth, the "new tenant" of Number 6's London home.

Cats are often associated with magic, darkness, and the feminine. Also, the phrase "curiosity killed the cat" can be linked with the profession of espionage, from which most Village denizens have either resigned or been unwillingly plucked.

I'm not sure it has any deeper significance than that, but of course, McGoohan put lots of things into the series which were intended to provoke endless debate. He once claimed that there were "false clues" scattered in many episodes for this very reason.
