Mine is definitely The Schizoid Man. It's cleverly written and brilliantly executed. It's hardly the only great episode, of course. (SPOILER) I honestly found myself doubting who was the real number 6, what a brilliant mindfuck! I could see how even a man with the fortitude of mind of number 6 might be filled with doubt.

I think it is the best episode to show people the essence of the series. -

Re: Favorite episdode?
Mon, October 13, 2003 - 8:43 AMFALL OUT! It was such a brilliant episode, but was such a completely non-"Prisioner" episode. Whcih makes sense, since it was the last one... -

Fall Out is a self-contained surrealist film that ALSO informs and illuminates the entire series. It is the alpha and the omega my friends

Wed, October 15, 2003 - 10:55 AMWhat a brilliant mind-fuck! You have a guy going around insisting that he is not Number Six so what do you do? Screw with him so that he insists that he is...

Re: Favorite episdode?
Wed, May 19, 2004 - 2:08 PMMy favorite episode would have to be "Hammer into Anvil". Number 6 gets revenge for the death of women he knew.
He turns to tables on #2 and forces him to resign. -
-
Re: Favorite episdode?
Wed, May 19, 2004 - 2:50 PMa tossup between Hammer Into Anvil (because it's gratifying to see bullies put down) and Living In Harmony (because its content was daring enough to get it banned in the U.S. by the network when the series was first broadcast here.)

Re: Favorite episdode?
Wed, May 19, 2004 - 3:30 PMi think chimes of big ben is one of the most fun and an exemplary episode of the series. leo mckern was the best #2 -- nothing beats him and macgoohan sparring.

Re: Favorite episdode?
Thu, June 3, 2004 - 12:02 PMDance of the Dead really does it for me. The female Number 2 just oozes evil and cunning. The Villagers seem completely sheeplike in their devotion to the local order. Number 6 has to flail about mostly in vain throughout, learn his way around. And, I gotta say, the Gothic theme at the end was great. According to stories I've read, the costumes were toned way down from the original shooting script - Number 2 was supposed to be Jack the Ripper, not Tinker Bell or whatever she was. -

Thu, June 3, 2004 - 6:05 PMHeh, yeah, that's a good one too. Really has that surrealist feel to it.

Number Two, initially diabolically determined, gets hammered. As much as he deserves it you have to feel for that poor bastard by the end...

Re: Favorite episdode?
Thu, December 30, 2004 - 2:13 PMi love many happy returns, arrival and living in harmony. though a,b and c were intriguing due to the connection to patrick mcgoohan's secret agent telly series, which i have yet to see.
what to you all think of the episodes "the general" and "it's your funeral"? i enjoy watching these as well. -

Re: Favorite episdode?
Thu, December 30, 2004 - 2:15 PMthe girl who was death was a nice change of pace for the show, but having seen it only once i am only attracted the climax in the lighthouse/rocket thing. it was very confusing to watch when i saw it.

Re: Favorite episdode?
Sat, April 30, 2005 - 1:03 PMAll-in-all I think the General was my favorite episode followed closely by the Schizoid Man (which I saw right after it). I also liked A,B, and C alot.
I think what order you see them in might have something to do with which one's you prefer.
Once Upon A Time was kind of like watching an intense play. Fallout I didnt find terribly engaging. I thought it was just over-the-top with the surrealism and as an ending to the series was kind of anticlimactic. I do like how it keeps you guessing and doesnt tie up the loose ends though.

Re: Favorite episdode?
Wed, July 6, 2005 - 2:28 AM"Fall Out." From end to end, the best-written, best-directed and funniest episode of the entire series. By now, the '60s London into which No. 6 emerges is as remote and fantastic as the Village, thus adding another twist to the Moebius strip.
Whenever I'm trying to turn someone else on to the series, I usually screen "Many Happy Returns."

Two categories
Ones that you can easily share with "non believers":
Arrival ( I think it sums the whole series in a single episode.)
Chimes of Big Ben
Many Happy Returns
Ones that require a deeper look to get them
Free For All
Dance of the Dead
Schitzoid Man
